Berkeley Social Welfare’s undergraduate major reflects our goal to provide Berkeley undergraduate students with a broad-based introduction to America’s social welfare problems and social policies within a social science context. Students gain knowledge of organized networks of public and private social services, and the basic practice methods associated with the social work profession. In doing so, students acquire the knowledge needed to understand, address, and actively participate in the amelioration of critical social problems in American Society.

CHRISTIAN COUNSELING & MENTORSHIP
RYLA Recipient & Founder of S.o.T.
My name is Matthew Cochran. I have long-term goals in addition to serving the addictions and recovery community to become a Licensed MFT and Addictions Counselor while aiming to study Health Administration for the opportunities available to create a socially-aimed business. I intend to practice social work through the Christian church with my primary groups of focus being at-risk youth and young adults in minority communities struggling with recovery from devastation; both natural and emotional. I have a passion for education and program design. so I hope to create a ministry that can focus on developing young leaders in the black community through identifying educational, financial, and spiritual needs. Ultimately, my dream is to redesign my grandmother's Christian-based recovery center and to facilitate workshops and seminars aimed at the holistic well-being of families. This would include identifying risk factors for future health disorders, addictions counseling, nutritional needs, financial responsibility, mental illness awareness, job-readiness and suicide prevention. I work primarily with youth (ages 8-18) because, in my past, service aimed at preventative care in this community has been most impactful to that demographic of people. I wish to learn more dynamic teaching skills as to have more to offer to the young adult demographic (ages 18-31). Overall, I understand these goals are extravagant; Yet, I believe attainable through my faith and dedicated service.
I have an immense knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites along with Adobe Suites which give me an edge in the creation of digital and printable materials for marketing of internal department efficiency. My work experience, although diverse, has granted me the opportunity to understand how to communicate extremely well between various parts of for-profit and nonprofit organizations. I know with minimal amounts of oversight, I can be a tremendous asset to your organization and provide lasting value
